Healthy Liverwort populations can often be a good indicator a healthy, freshwater creek, stream or river system. They are found growing on rocks and creek banks. This group was photographed on a boulder in Matthews Creek which is a pristine river that runs through the Mountain Bridge wilderness in Northwestern, South Carolina.
