Milkweeds ( Asclepias sp.) are named for their milky white sap, which is considered toxic. Monarch caterpillars feed on milkweeds and capture some of their poisonous qualities as protection against predation. In the fall, the seed pods burst open revealing seeds with fluffy, feathery wings used for dispertion.
