Yellow Jacket Nest, Vespula maculifrons, Mountain Bridge Wildern

Yellow Jackets (Vespula maculifrons) are ground nesting wasps. They are yellow and black striped, active during the day and can be agressive if their nest is disturbed. This photo is of a fairly uncommon sight: a nest built above ground in the roots of an overturned tree. Yellow Jackets are found just about anyway in the United States and have now been introduced to Hawaii, where the lack of a real winter has made them a very serious pest due to colonies that grow unchecked by climate.
