Northern Water Snakes (Nerodia sipedon) are often mistaken for venomous cottonmouth snakes and unfortunately killed as a result. However, they are completely harmless to humans although they will often bite if picked up. They live a very wide range of freshwater habitats including swamps, streams, rivers, marshes, carolina bays and lakes. This large individual was found resting in a discarded pile of concrete blocks along a fairly polluted city stream in Greenville, South Carolina.
