Venus' fly traps are famously known for their ability to catch small invertebrates in a special set of jaw-like, modified leaves. Like most carnivorous plants, the animal contributions to their diet is necessary to suppliment the lack of nutrients found in their acidic native habitats. Venus' fly traps are endemic to specialized coastal habitats in North and South Carolina. When they were first discovered, some speculated that they arrived on earth from outerspace because of their bizarre appearance and behavior. These amazing plants have grown increasingly scare in recent years due to poaching and habitat loss.
