Members of the Magnolia family were some of the earliest flowering plants on earth. Although some of the initial pollinating species were thought to be beetles, from an evolutionary perspective, it wasn't long until bees arose to become the world's dominate pollinators. For millennia, plants around the world, depending on where they are found, have relied on members of the nearly 20,000 species of bees to aid in their reproduction. Today, thanks to a variety of pressures including pesticides, habitat loss, and climate change, many species of bees are in serious decline, fading from existence and leaving the plants that rely on them with an uncertain future of their own.
